Instructions
The Unifying Theme Writing Competition is open to all current UCF undergraduate students. Participation is not limited to those enrolled in writing courses or programs. The Unifying Theme, “The Environment and Global Climate Change: Our Planet. Our Education. Our Future.” asks entrants to consider the ways in which environmental issues intersect with education and the future of the planet. Compositions should address current issue(s) relating to the environment and/or global climate change, as well as potential solutions. Consider how you as an individual and/or how the nations of the world can improve the current state of our planet’s environmental health.
Submissions will be judged by a faculty panel based on relevance to the theme and on the quality of the composition. The competition is open to students in all fields.
The following submissions are accepted: poetry, short stories, essays, creative writing. Reflections on the theme and other creative approaches are encouraged. Please refrain from submitting research papers or scientific research abstracts, but feel free to use scientific research among your personal reflections.
All compositions are limited to a maximum of 1,500 words. Students may submit one work from one category only.
All submissions must be original work.
The online registration form (closed) which includes a space to upload the writing entry is due Wednesday, February 20th.
Submission guidelines:
- Word or pdf. Format
- Do not include applicant’s name anywhere on submitted document
- Include title of piece on the submitted document
By submitting your work, you acknowledge that your work may be posted to the Unifying Theme website and/or any social network in relations to the Unifying Theme.

Awards
Winners will be announced via Award Ceremony March 20th 1:30-3pm in Student Union room 224.
